Virtually all domestic water bills include charges for "surface water drainage", which means taking away the rainwater that falls on your home.
BUT not all households should pay it.

Estimates vary, but as many as 5 million homes are not connected to the public drainage system and may have been overcharged a combined total of £2 billion!

In 2001 Building Regulations were introduced which meant that properties built since then should have soakaways or other methods of allowing water to drain naturally into the land - but water companies still continued to overcharge.

AND, even though water companies passively encourage you to claim a "rebate" if you believe you shouldn't pay the charge, they often make it difficult by demanding that you prove that you shouldn't be paying the charge.

Then, even if you succeed, they may hide behind OFWAT guidelines to offer a maximum rebate of 1 years' payment - rather than the full overpayment.
